Today our class assembled some of the “Fields of Remembrance” crosses that are to be erected out side the school before ANZAC Day. We had to measure to make sure they all looked the same and were assembled correctly. They will be laid out in the same way as the soldiers marched when they were alive, in straight rows. We have 30 crosses and they bear the names of people from our wider area that died in service for our country. Included are a nurse and other heroes who won the Victoria Cross and died in battle. Sergeant Dave Gallaher, captain of the All Blacks, was killed at Passchendale. Private Basil Mercer was the youngest to be killed. He was just 17 years old.
