BACK-ISSUE OF NEWSLETTER

25 August 2010

Kia Ora koutou,

Our students are really enjoying our Clubs programme – we are able to offer a variety of choices due to the assistance of parents. We are very grateful to have this input and value your voluntary time and skills. Our new furniture has been ordered for the Library Learning Centre, thanks to funds raised by the SWAT team. As we are leading into our library Book Fair, we are having a daily reading roster where teachers read to different classes, and support staff and parents are also volunteering to read.

Kid-speak:
Our Year 8 students attended an Open Day at Rodney College last week so I asked about first impressions:
Big….Cool….Confusing….Complicated….Free lunch!
Some of their comments about the day:
We enjoyed taking part in the PE activities….We met new friends….We loved the haunted house music activity with Mrs Hopkins….It was fun writing poems about herbs after tasting them….In Science we set flour on fire – cool!

Daffodil Day:
We will be having a gold coin trail this Friday for Daffodil Day – we look forward to your support.

The Tomarata Times:
The second edition was published this week and is a really entertaining read. It is distributed to all classrooms and copies are in a folder in the foyer. 'Well done' to the reporters, publisher and editor. There is a small sample of the reporting over the page.

Scholastic Book Club:
Offer Six is due back at school by Monday 13th September.

Funky Footwear Day:
This was a wonderful day with lots of very funky footwear! We raised $239 for the Auckland Cystic Fibrosis Society – many thanks for your generosity.

Technology Classes:
This is a reminder that the next 6 week block of technology classes resume on Tuesday August 31st for our Year 7 & 8 students. Year 7's will be having Graphics classes and Year 8's will have Textiles (sewing).

Tomarata Website:
Hopefully our website will have current newsletters displayed shortly. The blogs are being added to as part of the class programme, so they will still be current. Thanks so much to those of you who have taken a few minutes to enter some written feedback in the comments section.

Clubs:
There will be no clubs next week because of the Touch/Netball day – the final clubs afternoon will be the following week (Wednesday 8th September).

Musical Visitor:
On Monday 23rd August the Senior Syndicate was privileged to have Mary Wilson, a viola player who has performed in many orchestras, visit. Mary brought in her viola and violin and played them for us, as well as talking about them. She also discussed 'life in the orchestra' and what it means to play a musical instrument. This visit is linked to the Senior Syndicate term study 'Coherence and Music'. By Aimee

Book Fair:
This week is our Book Fair. The books will be on display for viewing from Friday 27th until Wednesday 1st September. Parents are invited to browse and choose to buy for themselves or the school. The students will have the opportunity to look and compile wish-lists as well. The school benefits from any sales made. Don't forget to send in any unwanted 2nd hand books for the adult literature table.

Our Book Character dress up day is on Friday 27th as well. The theme is "Round the World". The students will be working on a template to plan their character. Remember to ask them what they have planned.

Soccer Canteen:

There is only one more week! Please - we still need volunteers this Saturday. Enquiries/offers of help to Gaylene Mason 423 8047 or Sue at the office 423 7022.

Mathex magic!
On Friday the 13th (oh no!) of August, Tomarata's six Mathex teams went all the way to Kamo College to test their mathematical brains against schools from all around Northland. It was a very fun experience, with lots of cheering, brains buzzing and chocolate bars being munched on. The questions were tough but the teams did well with Tomarata 1 (Year 8) coming fourth equal and Tomarata 2 (Year 8) coming fifth out of 42 teams. Nearly everyone went to Burger King for dinner afterwards and Alexis and Briar L saw Mr. M in the drive through. Even Ally made a special appearance and we were all happy to see her. Mathex was not to be missed. "If you didn't go to Mathex then you must be kicking yourselves, because you missed out!"
Story by Alexis Farr

It's so "IT" right now!
A new craze has started in Room 6 – GLEE CLUB! A lot of people have come out of their shell and started singing in the front of the club and I spotted some new talent. Soccer is so "IT" right now with many people playing it not only on the field but on the court as well, before, during and after school! OMG is the "IT" saying because it means "Oh Miss Gummer" She loves it when people say that, so if you see Miss Gummer, say OMG! Rory says that "Titan Quest is so "IT"" even though only four people play it. "Elephants are so "IT" right now" says Briar L, a frequent "IT" reporter. "What isn't so "IT" right now is Rhys kicking the ball on the roof", says an upset Jamie. Leah thinks she is so "IT" right now and Miss Gummer TOTALLY agrees. Harry Potter is SO "IT" in Room six and everyone LOVES Mr. M's Harry doll. And that's what's so "IT" right now! "IT"
